India’s jewellery market transforms as lab-grown diamonds move from fringe to mainstream in 2026

India’s laboratory-grown diamond (LGD) industry is entering a decisive phase in 2026, backed by regulatory clarity, wider consumer acceptance and rapid retail expansion. India is officially adopting the term ‘laboratory-grown diamond’ and ‘laboratory-created diamond’, while disallowing misleading or outdated descriptions such as “fake” or “artificial”.

The move is expected to boost consumer confidence, enhance credibility, and ensure transparency at the point of sale. Lab-grown diamond segment benefits from a dual advantage, with sustainability and affordability working in its favour.
