Fire at Nirav Modi’s sealed diamond unit in Surat SEZ last week

A major fire at Firestar Diamond Company, owned by diamantaire Nirav Modi, inside the Surat Special Economic Zone (SURSEZ) at Sachin in Surat has triggered alarm, and raised questions for enforcement agencies. The unit was not operational but witnessed two consecutive fires prompting concerns over possible tampering and destruction of crucial evidence.

According to reports, the first fire broke out late on January 8 night of the jewellery manufacturing unit and Fire brigade teams brought the blaze under control. However, the fire reignited late on January 9, spreading from the ground floor to the first floor, raging nearly six hours before multiple fire teams doused the blaze. With everything inside the office destroyed, including machinery, jewellery stock, computers and crucial office files. However, no injuries or casualties are reported; and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nirav Modi, once a prominent name in India’s diamond industry, fled the country in 2018 after being accused in the 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.
