Japanese firms promote pearls at Hong Kong jewellery shows

Japanese companies have promoted pearls from Japan at two jewellery fairs in Hong Kong. The events that began this month are billed as the world’s largest jewellery shows. More than 4,000 firms from over 40 countries and regions showcased their products at the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show at AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

More than 300 businesses from Japan took part, including those from central Japan’s Mie Prefecture, which is known as a centre of pearl culturing. Exhibitors at AsiaWorld-Expo displayed a variety of pearls and drew attention to the high-quality lustre and colours of the products. They were proof of the advanced processing technology that was used to create them.

At AsiaWorld-Expo, a wholesaler from mainland China said Japanese pearls remain popular in the Chinese market. He added that their appeal is their size and their surface texture. The wholesaler expressed an intention to purchase anything that appeared to be attractive.

Ogami Naotaka, the president of a pearl processing and sales firm in Mie Prefecture, said that Hong Kong, where many buyers get together, is the most effective place to promote Japanese pearls.
