Gold, diamond jewellery worth Rs 1 crore seized at Kolkata Airport, one arrested

Gold and diamond jewellery valued at over Rs 1 crore was seized at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Aug 7, leading to one arrest.

The consignment, which also contained ruby- and emerald-studded ornaments, was recovered from a domestic cargo shipment during a security check at the airport. Preliminary estimates suggest the seized gold jewellery alone exceeds Rs 50 lakh, while the market value of the diamonds is believed to be significantly higher.

Police arrested the individual after airport authorities grew suspicious when he arrived to receive the consignment. Acting on this suspicion, police detained him at the airport and recovered the jewellery after interrogation. The police have not revealed the name of the person who collected the shipment.

Investigators are now probing the shipment’s origin, its intended destination, and the possible involvement of a larger smuggling network. The accused has been taken to the NSCBI Airport Police Station for questioning. Police are also trying to identify those who instructed the receiver and determine whether others were involved in the operation.

The recovery of jewellery worth more than Rs 1 crore from a domestic cargo consignment has triggered heightened security measures at the airport. Authorities have intensified surveillance and reinforced monitoring of passengers and cargo movement as the investigation continues.
