Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organised a Jewellers Awareness Programme on Hallmarking at Ariyalur on June 19, 2026, for jewellers from Ariyalur and Perambalur districts. The programme was organised to create awareness among jewellers regarding BIS Hallmarking requirements, regulatory provisions, compliance obligations and digital services offered by BIS to facilitate effective hallmarking implementation.
Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, delivered the welcome address and outlined the programme’s objectives. He highlighted BIS’s role in ensuring quality, safety and consumer confidence through standardisation, certification and hallmarking initiatives.
Highlighting the importance of hallmarking, Shri S. D. Dayanand stated that the programme was specially organised for jewellers from Ariyalur and Perambalur, which are presently non-mandatory districts for hallmarking. He said, “BIS Hallmarking has become an important tool for building consumer trust in the jewellery sector. When customers purchase hallmarked jewellery, they receive an assurance regarding the purity of the precious metal, enabling informed purchasing decisions. Hallmarking not only protects consumers but also benefits genuine jewellers by enhancing their credibility, strengthening customer confidence and promoting fair trade practices. Consumers increasingly prefer hallmarked jewellery, making compliance an important business advantage for jewellers.”
Representatives of various Jewellery Associations from Ariyalur and Perambalur districts were felicitated during the programme in recognition of their support in promoting hallmarking awareness among jewellers. An interactive Open House discussion followed, where participants sought clarifications on hallmarking norms, HUID generation, registration procedures, compliance requirements and BIS digital services. BIS officials addressed the queries raised by jewellers and assured continued guidance and support for the effective implementation of hallmarking provisions.
