Gold sales dipped sharply this Dussehra even as prices soared to record highs, dampening festive demand but boosting investment purchases. According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), gold demand by volume fell 25% to 18 tonnes, compared with 24 tonnes during the same festival last year.
However, in value terms, sales rose 30–35%, underscoring the impact of soaring bullion prices. Gold was priced at Rs 1.16 lakh per 10 grams this Dussehra, up from around Rs 78,000 per 10 grams a year earlier.
“Last year’s Dussehra was better in terms of volume. This year, high prices have dented demand,” said Surendra Mehta, national secretary, IBJA.
