India debates over lab-grown diamond regulations.

Businesses, regulatory bodies, and consumers have joined the debate surrounding the regulation of lab-grown diamonds. With significant developments coming from different corners of the globe, opinions vary to the extent of the way these unique gems are marketed.  

Over the years, Lab-grown diamonds have often been marketed as eco-friendly alternatives to mined diamonds. This term used to describe LGD has stirred controversy when an Indian official recently stated these diamonds should only be dubbed ‘synthetic’.

This has sparked discussions in the Indian diamond industry about the correct language and labelling surrounding LGDs. Many believe that as LGD is grown from mined diamonds, it should not be clubbed with synthetic materials.
