Misconceptions around lab-grown diamonds continue to shape how consumers view this fast-evolving category of fine jewellery. A few experts have come forward to clear the confusion in consumers’ minds …
Prapanjj S K Kota, Founder, Reia Diamonds, points out that one of the most persistent myths is the belief that lab-grown diamonds are imitation stones, often casually referred to as “American diamonds.” He emphasises that this comparison is fundamentally incorrect. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, identical to mined ones in their chemical composition, physical structure, and optical brilliance. They are evaluated using the same international grading standards and offer the same durability, strength, and sparkle.
Echoing similar sentiments, Sumit Dassani, Partner, Dassani Brothers, believes that the conversation around lab-grown diamonds has long been driven by assumption rather than understanding. He stresses that the only real difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds is their origin. Created in controlled environments using advanced technology, lab-grown diamonds match natural diamonds in every measurable way and should not be viewed as substitutes or lesser alternatives.
Yash Kataria, Director, Kataria Group of Companies, says the biggest shift is not in the product but in the consumer mindset. He notes that lab-grown diamonds are still often dismissed as inferior or “not real,” despite being scientifically and visually indistinguishable from mined diamonds. Today’s buyers, particularly millennials and Gen Z are increasingly drawn to transparency, sustainability, and conscious luxury. Lab-grown diamonds, he says, allow them to invest in fine jewellery without compromising on ethics or quality.
Taken together, these perspectives underline a growing consensus within the jewellery industry. Lab-grown diamonds are not redefining what a diamond is; they are redefining how luxury, value, and responsibility coexist in contemporary fine jewellery.
