Smashing its pre-auction high estimate of $2.8m, a historic necklace linked to Marie Antoinette sold for $4.8m at Sotheby’s Geneva. Seven bidders competed for the magnificent Georgian jewels!
The necklace with over 300 carats of diamonds from India’s famed Golconda mines has survived for more than 240 years. The anonymous winning bidder is now in possession of the most talked about necklaces of the year.
The necklace had been in the possession of an Asian collector for almost 50 years. While the precise origin of the necklace is unknown, it is estimated to have been created for royalty or a high-ranking aristocrat most likely the French or English court.
